New low in Pipi harvesting

NEW LOW IN SIZE OF HUNTED PIPISThe size of these Pipi shells in a harvesters midden on the edge of Beach 5 carpark beggers belief. How can the Pipi poplulation survive when this is the size they are now down to taking out? These little guys, compared to a 5 cent peice for scale, never got to breed and set the next generation.See the video "naughty peoples track" for other impacts of this same issue in the video section of this site.…See More

Slower than I had hoped

After looking around, and realizing that a place for VBOP needed to be free! No cost, No spammers and preferably No Ads! There was a lot left, just blogs really. So I have set up VBOPING again over on blogger. Only this time I am trying to incorporate links from other Social media as well in the same place. The blog will also be a group effort and hopefully anyone will be able to contribute their observation. In the short term you will have to ask for…See More

ON GOING PIPI HARVESTING...

22 May 2010

As a follow-up to Norm's Pipi shell survey of 28th Janurary 2010, we randomly picked up pipi shells between beaches 1 &2. Of the 23 shells, 21 of them showed signs of chipping. The other two although un-chipped, did not have any bore holes of natural predators visible either.

Vast numbers of empty shells are…

OBSBLOG

22 May 2010

We surveyed Beaches 5, 3, 2 & 1 today between 07:20 - 10:00 hrs, and the pressure was 1022 hpa. The water tempurature was 14.2 c.

Beach 5 continues to change profile, with the new level moving higher up the beach. The "bench" cut is now 72cms deep, peaking at 90 cms.

Both Beaches 5, 3 & 1 had this feature, but with Beach 5 having the most dramatic example.…
